Brunei witnesses upsurge in insurance claims

BRUNEI has witnessed an increase in third-party insurance claims in recent years, according to Haji Darryl bin Haji Maidin, the Deputy General Manager and Chief Corporate and Legal Compliance Officer of Takaful Brunei.

“Increase here means a rise in the number of occurrences and the amount of compensations made,” he said on Thursday, while revealing the new Motor Claims Guideline initiative by the Land Transport Department (JPD) at the Ministry of Communications, the Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF), and the Brunei Insurance Takaful Association (BITA).

The RBPF recorded 3,366 traffic accident cases in 2014, 3,345 in 2015 and 3,375 in 2016 – with an average of 3,300 cases annually, or nine traffic accidents per day.

Meanwhile, statistics from JPD show an 89 per cent increase in the number of vehicles registered annually since 2013, with an average of 1.5 people per vehicle in the country.
