LOCAL cycling enthusiasts will have new avenues to test their ability in the ‘Porsche Survivor Series’ – the first of its kind cycling competition that will cover routes in all four districts on separate dates.
With the aim to further build up cycling and promote healthy lifestyle through sports, Porsche Centre Brunei (QAF Eurokars Sdn Bhd) has announced to organise the ‘Porsche Survivor Series’, in collaboration with Cycltechno Event Management and Brunei Darussalam Cycling Federation as well as the Department of Youth and Sports.
Details of the competition was revealed in a press conference yesterday by Clement Chong, Deputy General Manager of QAF Eurokars with Mewsum Wong of Cycltechno Event Management and Omar Ali Ibrahim, Secretary General of Brunei Darussalam Cycling Federation and Roslan bin Haji Md Tahir, Acting Deputy General Manager of Takaful Brunei Am Sdn Bhd.
The ‘Porsche Survivor Series’ will be held in Belait District on April 2, Tutong District on April 30, Temburong District on April 14 and in Brunei-Muara District on July 30.
Clement Chong said, “We would like to take this opportunity to convey our thanks to Brunei Darussalam Cycling Federation for allowing us to be partner in this event.”
He added, “When it comes to racing, Porsche is well known for it. As proven in 2016, Porsche has won the Le Mans Race over 18 times over the century.”
Mewsum Wong explained that to have such iconic performance branding associated with cycling development will only serve to produce podium finish in the upcoming Tokyo 2020 Olympic, as the country sees an unprecedented surge in cycling.
“Partnering with Porsche will produce a unique tournament for cyclists especially the young ones to compete from an early age and excel in the sport,” she said.
Touching on the categories that will be contested, Omar Ali Ibrahim said, “Elite and Under 23 Category is open to any male rider above 17 years old (year 2000 and earlier), of any nationality. Both professional and amateur cyclists may participate in this category. The Master Category is open to any male rider aged between 40 to 49 years old of any nationality specifically for amateur riders. The Veteran Category is open for any amateur male rider aged 50 years old and above of any nationality. The last category is the novice that is open to any amateur male rider above 15 years old of any nationality.”
He also stressed the needs for each rider participating in the competition to obtain the UCI license and insurance coverage for the race.
Roslan bin Haji Md Tahir, the Acting Deputy General Manager of Takaful Brunei Am Sdn Bhd meanwhile spoke about Takaful coverage for the riders through the Personal Accident Takaful for Active Life and the benefits if an accident happens during cycling.
The race will be contested by accumulating points from racing in each of the four districts. The last race in Bandar Seri Begawan will be a night race.
As a bonus, the top 30 racers who have the most points by surviving the four series will be eligible to race at a bonus race at the finale called “The Champion of Champion Race”.
The registration fee at a discounted rate for all four districts is at $200, while for individual challenge is at $60. Participants will be given four special official Porsche Design jerseys for the separate race in each district.
